You can also fly direct to Cape Town too I think.

Our return flights cost $1400 from CHS to NYC to Joburg to Durban

The flight from NYC to Joburg is 14 hours I think. (time difference is 6 hours)

We rented a car in Cape Town and in Durban and had an easy time getting around. Keeping your car secure is important but there are car guards in every parking lot and it’s easy to park. You have to carry coins or cash though for tipping the guards.
